bee yü began with the desire to harness and celebrate the restorative powers of Manuka honey in a collection of natural skin care.
This natural wonder ingredient has been used for centuries and is renowned for its extraordinary antimicrobial properties. Here, we uncover exactly what Manuka honey is and why you should be using it in your natural skin care routine.
What is Manuka Honey?
Manuka honey can only be sourced from bees pollinating Manuka trees ‘Leptospermum Scoparium’in New Zealand, which grow in very remote, wild areas predominately in the North Island.
We ethically source our Manuka honey from The True Honey Co. who work with local landowners to place hives carefully in the heart of wild, remote bush country, just before the Manuka trees flower.
The bees exclusively pollinate the flowers of the Manuka tree, and carry the nectar back to the hives, which is then carefully collected by beekeepers. Since each section of Manuka bush only produces nectar for 3-4 weeks each year, and depending on the weather during flowering, yields can be very low, making the Manuka honey we use in our products very precious.
What does UMF mean?
We only use high concentrations of Manuka honey in our natural face creams and moisturisers, which is selected and independently tested to have a UMF (Unique Manuka Factor)rating of 20+. You’ll notice that Manuka Honey appears high up in our ingredients lists, showing that we are using amounts that will make a difference to your skin.
The UMF ratingtests for all three naturally-occurring chemical markers of the honey; Methylglyoxal (MG, an antibacterial sugar molecule), Dihydroxyacetone (also known as DHA, the age of the honey), and Leptosperin (the indicator of genuine Manuka).
The 20+ factor denotes its purity and power, and is considered to be antibacterial at a medicinal level.
What can Manuka Honey do for my skin?
A natural antimicrobial that has been well documented and scientifically proven to stimulate the immune system, Manuka honey promotes healing and healthy skin by providing nutrients, vitamins and amino acids that boost cell metabolism.
Naturally occurring acids aid in the clearing of dead skin cells and prevention of acne by oxygenating pores to help draw out bacteria. Anti-inflammatory properties also help to soothe sore and inflamed skin, while the honey’s natural healing powers help to neutralise skin’s PH levels and aid repair.
Manuka honey is also known to help lock in moisture, leaving skin feeling hydrated, with a healthy glow.
